10 Questions With Michael Paget of Bullet For My Valentine

Rock House recently caught up with Michael Paget of Bullet For My Valentine for a quick 10 question interview.

RH: Your first instrument was?

MP: My first was a 3/4 size classical guitar with nylon strings. I think I saved the money from my paper route or maybe it was my birthday money; something like that.

RH: Tell me about your first guitar and how old were you when you got it?
MP: I was as about 17 years old when I got it and I couldn’t even tune the guitar for about a month.  I just kind of played one string. Then my cousin Clive, who plays guitar, came to my house and tuned it for me. Then I really started to learn some chords from the little booklet that came with it. You know, I can still remember the smell of that guitar!

RH: What was the first song you learned to play on guitar?

MP: The first song I ever learned on guitar was 'Polly' by Nirvana. Nice easy four chord riff, slow rhythm too.

RH: You are magically thrown back in time and become a member of a 70’s or 80’s Metal band, who would it be?

MP: I would so LOVE to be in Iron Maiden!

RH: Given the chance, which current guitar player would you most want to collaborate with and why?
MP: Man, there are so many that I would love to work with, but right now Billy Gibbons from ZZ Top comes to mind. For me that would be an amazing opportunity because I’m sure I could learn so much from him as a player and a fan! He is an amazing and much underrated guitar player!

RH: Aside from Metal, what other genre of music lurks inside your closet as the one you love to play and why?

MP: I love to play the Blues! About two years ago something weird happened to me, I really got buzzing on the Blues! It started with Stevie Ray Vaughan and Hendrix, and then I just started living it! I bought all kinds of vintage amps and Fender guitars, etc. I started listening to the Blues so much that I would pick up a guitar and that’s all that would come out. I thought to myself you gotta mix it up dude, otherwise it will start to show through too much in BULLET'S music! Blues is definitely a passion of mine.

RH: If you had to learn to play a new instrument which one would it be and why?

MP: I played drums years ago and would love to play them again. Back when I was starting out I had to play drums just to get into bands because there were so many other guitar and bass players at the time! I got a kit off of my other cousin Nevil, I eventually sold that very same kit to Moose, our drummer now! The drums are great because you can hit the shit out of them!

RH: Other than your guitar, one piece of gear they would have to pry from your hands?

MP: My Dunlop Wah Wah pedal! I have tried lots of different Wah pedals in my rig, but this one just seems to compliment what I’m playing so well!

RH: What advice can you give to players who are trying to develop their own sound and style?

MP: You have to discover first what you want to play and sound like. I would listen to the players that influenced me most and just learn from them. Try getting DVDs (Rock House of course), CDs or use You Tube, there are lots of resources out there now that I didn’t have years ago. I also try to just jam out on my own; I think this is the best way of developing your own personal style because it’s just you on guitar with no music.  Most important, try new and different things that keep you learning!

RH: Playing music and being in a band can at times be difficult, what motivates you to keep challenging yourself?

MP: CORONAS!  Ha ha! It does get hard on the road, but luckily for us we as a band have known each other forever, we are like brothers and we have a great crew too! I just challenge myself to some Pantera solos at the back of the tour bus, keeps me in check!

THE BLED ARE BREAKING UP

The Bled
This sucks. Not just because I really like The Bled and I’m sad they won’t be making new music anymore, but because The Bled were one of THOSE bands. One of those bands that took risks outside of what their initial scene found acceptable, and as such one of those bands that ended up not fitting in anywhere. Too heavy/legit for the Christcore scene, too weird for the haircut band scene, not really metalcore, not really deathcore, not heavy enough for the brutal metal tours but too heavy for the pop/alt metal tours… not able to be put into any one specific box. And while it’s cool to say you’re doing something so unique it can’t be classified, for many bands at The Bled’s level that aren’t big enough to strike out on their own on a consistent basis (Tool, Muse, Dredg, Thrice, etc), that ultimately meant their undoing.
That’s my theory, anyway. According to AbsolutePunk.net (and MS reader “theskunkcatcher”) the band posted the following message on their Facebook page, without really giving any reasons for the breakup other than “we want to do other things with our lives”:

Best Ever Concert Done By any Band such a long time

Iron Maiden - Flight 666 (Concert And Film) DVD Rip XVID RAPIDSHARE

IRON MAIDEN: FLIGHT 666 is a full length documentary film, about the first leg of the band's historic SOMEWHERE BACK IN TIME WORLD TOUR in February and March of 2008, considered to be the most ambitious and adventurous tour in rock history. The film is a revealing portrait of one of the world's most successful rock bands and an inspirational and often humorous account of the chaotic world of a band on tour around the stadiums of the world.

Circumnavigating the globe in just 45 days, the band flew in a specially customised Boeing 757 airliner, piloted by lead singer Bruce ~censored~, with the entire tour crew and 12 tons of music and stage equipment on board, to 23 sold out stadium and arena shows in Asia, Australia and North, Central and South America. The band played in 13 countries, also landing in Azerbaijan and Papua New Guinea en route for fuel stops, travelling 50,000 miles (70,000 km) and performing to almost half a million fans – a schedule that was only made possible by having their own "magic carpet" which enabled them to go where they wanted with all the key elements of band, crew and equipment on board one plane, christened ED FORCE ONE.

Flight 666 gives a close up inside the scenes look at what happened on and off stage, when Maiden gave full access to a film crew for the first time ever, and contains some of the most spectacular live footage yet seen of Maiden. If you want to know what it is like to be part of the most adventurous tour in Rock history, you can't miss seeing this. Taking you from Mumbai to Santiago, LA to Sydney, Tokyo to San Paolo, Buenos Aires to Toronto and all points between, through exhaustion and fan pandemonium, travelling with band and crew on the plane, to and from shows, in the bar and during leisure time, this really is Access All Areas!!!

The film is produced by celebrated award–winning film makers Scot McFadyen and Sam Dunn of Banger Productions, based in Toronto, Canada, who have received international critical acclaim for their previous movies, METAL: A HEADBANGERS JOURNEY and GLOBAL METAL.

Shot in High Definition, the movie will be released in digital cinemas around the world, with superb 5.1 surround sound, mixed by the band's producer Kevin "Caveman" Shirley.

Iron Maiden's Manager, Rod Smallwood commented, "This film is a testament to an extraordinary tour and to our incredible fans all over the world. Seeing it on the big screen will make you feel like you were there on that spectacular journey."

Iron Maiden: Flight 666 is an honest and revealing portrait of one of the worlds most successful rock bands and a must–see for all Maiden fans and anyone interested in rock and what it is really like to tour at this level .

FOUR TEENAGE GIRLS MAKE COLOR ME BADD-STYLE VIDEO FOR METALLICA’S “UNFORGIVEN”

ShareThis
The bad news is that The PreZcotts, a group I have never heard of before and hope to forget within fifteen minutes of publishing this post, have not only recorded a truly horrendous cover of Metallica’s “Nothing Else Matters,” but they’ve made a video for it, too, and someone thought it was a good idea for that video to be partially in black and white and partially in exaggerated pastel colors. Because that aesthetic certainly cemented Color Me Badd’s place in music history.
The good news — besides the fact that at least they didn’t cover “Unforgiven II” or “Unforgiven III,” I mean — is that Yuto Miyazawa, the adorable Japanese tyke who has already made a name for himself playing with Ozzy Osbourne, plays the guitar solo on the cover, and he didn’t just do a note-for-note impersonation of Kirk Hammett. So that’s neat.
Either Metallica or one of their handlers liked this enough to post it on the band’s YouTube channel, which just goes to prove what I’ve always said: Metallica loves little girls.
And here’s a lil’ bonus for ya:
